Best PAYE Tax Calculator for Kenya

Kenyans with formal jobs pay taxes through a deduction known as Pay As You Earn (PAYE).

This is a mandatory tax that is deducted from your salary by your employer and submitted to the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) on your behalf. The PAYE tax is calculated based on your monthly salary and the tax rates that are applicable to your salary bracket.

You can use this calculator to determine the amount of PAYE tax that will be deducted from your salary.

Monthly Bands of Taxable Income (KES) Tax Rate
0 – 24,000 10%
On the next 8,333 25%
Remaining amount over 32,333 30%
Personal Relief: KES 2,400.00 per month
Minimum Taxable Income: KES 24,001.00 per month

Your employer will withhold this tax from your pay and submit it to KRA on your behalf via KRA Online Portal while you are an employee. All employee payroll information is compiled into a single uploadable zip file using an unique Microsoft Excel file called an iTax P10 file.

The ninth day of the month after the provided month is the deadline for PAYE returns. Late payments result in a KES 10,000 (USD 100) penalty punishment that is assessed against the employer.

Similar mandatory deductions are made on behalf of the employee for the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) and the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF).

NB: Following the gazetting of The Finance Act No. 8 of 2021, insurance relief is now applicable to NHIF as of January 2022.
